Real Madrid’s Medical Team Scans Wrong Leg, Misdiagnoses Mbappé

Real Madrid’s Medical Team Scans Wrong Leg, Misdiagnoses Mbappé

Real Madrid doctors accidentally performed an MRI on Kylian Mbappé’s uninjured right knee while his left leg was actually in pain. The scan showed no damage and he played three matches despite swelling in the injured knee. An X-ray of his left leg later revealed a partial tear of the posterior cruciate ligament. However, the club’s end-of-year medical report described it only as a “knee sprain” and advised a cautious rehabilitation plan. He missed the Spanish Super Cup semi-final and was limited in the final loss to Barcelona. Under a new coach, Mbappé scored nine goals in ten appearances before the knee problem recurred. He then returned to Paris for further tests and specialized treatment.

Exactly! A simple ID checklist before scans would save that kind of mix-up.

It's surprising that Mbappé managed three matches with undiagnosed swelling, especially after an MRI showed no damage on the wrong knee.

Surely other clubs have made medical errors, but misdiagnosing an elite player seems less common than reported.

Team doctors should implement double-check systems and cross-verify patient notes before scans to avoid costly oversights like this.
