NYSC Sanctions 24 Corps Members in Sokoto for Absenteeism and Abscondment

NYSC Sanctions 24 Corps Members in Sokoto for Absenteeism and Abscondment

At the passing-out ceremony for the 2025 Batch A, Stream I in Sokoto State, NYSC Coordinator Usman Yakubu Yaro announced sanctions for 24 corps members. Offences ranged from absenteeism to outright abscondment. Eight members will repeat their service year, while 16 will have their service extended. Yaro warned that truancy will not be tolerated and praised the majority for their commitment. Two exceptional corps members received the Sultan Saad Abubakar Award for outstanding community development. The coordinator urged outgoing members to remain good ambassadors and apply the skills they acquired. He also advised against night travel, recommending safe shelters such as NYSC lodges and security formations. Yaro thanked Governor Ahmed Aliyu for supporting state allowances and the Sultan of Sokoto for backing youth initiatives. He highlighted how medical and teaching corps members helped bridge gaps in rural healthcare and education. The ceremony closed with a call to uphold discipline, patriotism, and the ideals of national service.

What do you think motivates some corps members to skip essential NYSC activities despite strict penalties announced in Sokoto?

Are those penalties actually felt on ground, or do some corps see them as just empty threats?

I hear you. It's confusing why anyone would risk those penalties by skipping important NYSC duties.

Sanctioning 24 members feels severe without knowing if valid issues like health or safety concerns influenced their absenteeism.

Requiring eight offenders to repeat the service year might worsen morale, but perhaps it's the only way to enforce discipline.

Corps members should track attendance closely and seek official help early if facing challenges to avoid such strict NYSC sanctions.
