Oyo Police Nab Three Suspects Carrying Toy Pistol at Bodija

Oyo Police Nab Three Suspects Carrying Toy Pistol at Bodija

Oyo State Police officers on stop-and-search duty at Bodija Market Division intercepted a Bajaj motorcycle along Awolowo Road on April 6. The rider, Godwin Cletus M, 26, and his two pillion passengers, Adedokun Isah M, 17, and Rafiu Usman M, 19, were stopped on reasonable suspicion. A search of their belongings uncovered a toy pistol hidden in a black bag and six mobile phones. The discovery heightened suspicion and led to the suspects’ immediate arrest. DSP Ayanlade Olayinka confirmed that, upon interrogation, they confessed to robbing unsuspecting members of the public. The suspects remain in custody as investigators probe the full extent of their operations and seek other possible accomplices.

How common are stop-and-search operations like this in our markets, and do residents feel safer when officers check ordinary commuters?

Absolutely. These stop-and-searches appear quite frequent around markets, and locals often say they feel safer when officers patrol.

You're right, these stop‐and‐searches are quite common, but I'm skeptical they actually make commuters feel any safer.

Carrying a toy pistol is alarming, but the report doesn't explain how officers confirmed the weapon was fake before making the arrests.

Maybe the teenagers didn't realize how serious it looks, but it seems unfair to treat them like hardened criminals over a toy.

Market security teams should coordinate with local police to verify suspicious items quickly and avoid unnecessary confrontations with young riders.
