Makinwa Slams South Africa’s ‘Tactically Unsound’ Line-Up Ahead of South Korea Clash

Makinwa Slams South Africa’s ‘Tactically Unsound’ Line-Up Ahead of South Korea Clash — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Former Nigeria striker Henry Makinwa has criticised South Africa’s tactical approach at the 2026 World Cup ahead of their final group match against South Korea. He labelled their decision to use three centre-backs in the opening loss to Mexico at the Azteca Stadium as “tactically unsound.” Makinwa praised the switch back to a 4-3-3 system in their 1-1 draw with Czechia, saying the team showed more energy and determination to keep their slim qualification hopes alive. He warned that anything can still happen in this tournament and stressed the crucial nature of the upcoming fixture at Monterrey Stadium.

What impact do you think South Africa's three centre-back system will have against South Korea's pace upfront?

Exactly, stacking three at the back can close gaps, but those Korean forwards will still dart through any lapse.

It's odd to rely on three centre-backs against Mexico and then stick with the same setup for a completely different opponent.

Consistency helps a back three gel, especially before big games. Changing every match can disrupt stability.

I'm not convinced Makinwa's criticism is fair; maybe they wanted defensive stability at high altitude more than anything.

The coach should consider a more flexible formation to handle South Korea's quick transitions instead of sticking rigidly to three centre-backs.
