Why Blaming Matawalle Won’t Solve Nigeria’s Security Crisis
A recent demand by a US-based lawmaker to sack the Minister of State for Defence has reignited debate on Nigeria’s insecurity. But can one man’s removal fix problems rooted in decades of underfunded policing, poor intelligence coordination and rural marginalisation? Reducing a national crisis to a political scapegoat overlooks deep structural gaps. Weak police capacity, porous borders and reliance on the military for routine security duties all fuel banditry, insurgency and communal clashes. Real reform must rebalance roles. The police need modern equipment, training and local command. The military should reserve its forces for specialised operations. Only through systemic change—not symbolic dismissals—can lasting peace be achieved.
