Sweden Hammer Tunisia 5-1 in 2026 World Cup Opener

Sweden Hammer Tunisia 5-1 in 2026 World Cup Opener — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Tunisia’s World Cup campaign got off to a nightmare start as Sweden ran riot in their Group F opener. Yasin Ayari broke the deadlock after just ten minutes before Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres added further goals to give the Swedes a 3-0 lead. Tunisia pulled one back through Omar Rekik on the stroke of half-time after a pinpoint cross from Hannibal Mejbri. But the Carthage Eagles never recovered as Isak set up Gyokeres for a fourth and Ayari grabbed his second with a stunning long-range strike in injury time. With this 5-1 defeat, Tunisia join South Africa as the only African sides to lose their opening match at the 2026 World Cup.

It seems Sweden exploited every defensive gap, yet I'm not convinced Tunisia isn't stronger than this scoreline suggests.

I don't think this one-sided score tells the full story about Tunisia's quality or coaching tactics.

A practical step for Tunisia could be organizing focused drills on compact defending and quick counterattacks ahead of their next match.
