NCDC Reassures Nigerians: No Confirmed Hantavirus Case and Shares Safety Tips

NCDC Reassures Nigerians: No Confirmed Hantavirus Case and Shares Safety Tips

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed there are no recorded cases of Hantavirus in the country. This advisory follows reports of a Hantavirus cluster linked to international cruise travel. The agency says the overall risk to Nigerians remains low. Hantaviruses are carried by rodents, and humans can become infected through contact with rodent urine, droppings, saliva, or contaminated dust. Symptoms may include fever, fatigue, body aches, headache, stomach issues, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing. To stay safe, keep your surroundings clean, prevent rodent infestations, store food securely, dispose of waste properly, avoid direct contact with rodents and their droppings, and practice regular hand hygiene. The NCDC is closely monitoring the situation and urges everyone to rely on verified updates from official health authorities and avoid spreading unverified information.

It's interesting that despite a global concern about Hantavirus, NCDC reports zero cases locally and a low overall risk.

I get the reassurance about zero cases, but we should consider possible blind spots in surveillance and testing capacity before feeling too secure.

Keeping rodent droppings sealed and washing hands after outdoor activities seems simple enough to add to our daily safety routine.
