Transport Minister Saidu Alkali Resigns to Run for Gombe Governorship
Minister of Transportation Saidu Alkali has formally stepped down from President Tinubu’s cabinet ahead of the March 31, 2026 deadline for political appointees seeking elective office. The State House said Alkali tendered his resignation following a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He plans to run for governor of Gombe State in the 2027 general election, aiming to succeed Governor Inuwa Yahaya. His exit follows a directive from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, based on the Electoral Act 2026 and the INEC timetable. The rule requires appointees with political ambitions to leave office by March 31, 2026, to ensure fairness. Alkali is the third cabinet member to resign under this guideline. Earlier departures include the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and of State for Humanitarian Affairs, both stepping down to pursue governorship bids.
