Mining Firms Accused of Poisoning Ivo River; Okpanku Community Sounds Alarm
Residents of Okpanku in Enugu State claim their only water source, the Ivo River, has been contaminated by nearby mining operations in Ebonyi State. They allege toxic discharges from three companies have led to illnesses and deaths. The President-General of the community, Engineer Dr. Ajah Kanayochukwu Charles, reported that 30 to 40 people have died over the past two years. He called for an independent investigation and police intervention to halt further pollution and protect residents. Greenfield Nigeria Limited denies the allegations. A company spokesperson insists all activities comply with federal environmental laws and undergo frequent inspections by the national environmental agency. The firm has warned it may seek legal action if the claims persist.
