ASUU Owerri Zone Urges Anambra and Imo to Implement Stalled 2025 FG-ASUU Accord
The Academic Staff Union of Universities in the Owerri Zone has raised alarm over the five-month delay in rolling out the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University and Imo State University. Speaking at a press briefing on June 29, 2026, at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Zonal Coordinator Comrade Dennis Aribodor explained that both university branches submitted the agreement to their state governments in February, following directives from ASUU’s National Executive Council. He noted that the National Universities Commission also forwarded the accord to the Visitors and Vice-Chancellors of the two institutions. Despite repeated meetings with university authorities and governing councils, implementation is yet to begin. Comrade Aribodor described the situation as “bad and sad,” pointing out that state institutions in Bauchi, Benue, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, and Sokoto have already commenced execution of the agreement. ASUU Owerri Zone is calling on students, parents, civil society, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to appeal to the Anambra and Imo governors to honour the pact and preserve harmony in state-owned universities. Branch leaders at COOU and IMSU have echoed this demand, urging urgent action to improve staff welfare.
