Did I Offend My Gateman by Asking Him to Bring His Plate for Easter Rice?

Did I Offend My Gateman by Asking Him to Bring His Plate for Easter Rice? — 1 of 2
1 / 2

I often cook and share meals like rice for Easter with my gateman and neighbors as part of our tradition. This year, I invited my gateman to bring his own plate for a serving, but he refused. Later, a neighbor told me he felt insulted that I, a woman, asked a married man to fetch his own plate. I didn’t see my request as disrespectful. Did I really do something wrong?

I once told guests to bring plates for a potluck, and they looked surprised. A friendly reminder beforehand usually eases things.

I don't think asking for a plate is that wild – many people chip in with dishes for big meals.

I'm not sure it's a gender issue; maybe it was simply about him feeling singled out.

Next time, you could offer to serve everyone as you traditionally do or ask privately to avoid embarrassment.
