Nigeria and Brazil Plan Scientific Validation of African Traditional Medicine
A Nigerian delegation, including representatives of the Ooni of Ife, met with Brazil’s Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro to seek scientific validation and wider recognition for African traditional medicine. The Brazil–Nigeria meeting produced an implementation roadmap covering medicinal-plant research, technology transfer, academic exchanges, public-health innovation and a proposed Human Milk Bank in Nigeria. Participants also reviewed ongoing research involving 68 medicinal plants used in diabetes treatment. The partners plan to form a joint working group in August 2026, finalise a memorandum of understanding later in the year and begin pilot research and training programmes from late 2026. The collaboration aims to combine indigenous knowledge with evidence-based research while protecting biodiversity and improving healthcare outcomes.
