Nigerians’ Favorite Newspapers and Magazines of the 1970s & 1980s

Nigerians’ Favorite Newspapers and Magazines of the 1970s & 1980s

I grew up reading a rich mix of Nigerian newspapers and magazines in the 1970s and 1980s. The Daily Times was our family’s go-to paper, and I still smile at memories of Pa Johnson, the pipe-smoking cartoonist whose wit later earned him his own Fun Times comic. After the government takeover slowed Daily Times, we switched to Vanguard and Punch. Vanguard’s National and International Newsreels kept me informed of world events, while its sports pages and Mr & Mrs cartoon entertained me. I also followed the Page 3 Girl feature until it was banned in 1984. I briefly sampled Top News magazine, started by cartoonist Lawrence Akapa. Its sensational stories and doctored photos led to a fresh NUJ investigation that exposed its false claims on national television. From the late 1980s, Weekend Concord became my Saturday highlight. This magazine-style insert offered celebrity interviews, concert news, fashion updates and song lyrics. Soon, Saturday mornings meant Vanguard, Punch and Weekend Concord on my doorstep.

I always dismissed those weekend papers, yet a vintage magazine quietly sparked my love for reading.

I find it surprising how few of those classic titles remain in print despite their once massive influence.

I'm not sure Pa Johnson's humor was really that groundbreaking compared to other cartoonists at the time.
