Inferno Destroys Shops and Offices Along Murtala Mohammed Way in Kano

A late-night fire broke out around 10:54 p.m. on Thursday at the salvage yard in Takumbo Market along Murtala Mohammed Way in Fagge LGA, Kano State. Flames quickly spread from the yard to neighboring buildings. Firefighters from the State Fire Service Headquarters and nearby stations rushed to the scene after a distress call. On arrival, they found a one-storey building and adjoining commercial area engulfed in flames. The blaze destroyed goods and property across a roughly 300 × 200 ft area. It also affected the upper floor of the Kanawa Building—razing two offices, two parlours, two toilets and a kitchen—and damaged two ground-floor stores at TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited. The Fire Service attributed the outbreak to an electrical spark. Residents and business owners are urged to maintain electrical installations and report any fire incidents to the nearest fire station immediately to minimise damage.

Oh yes, regular drills and clear signage at those yards would surely ramp up safety and cut risks.

It's strange that a salvage yard blaze spread so fast despite being right next to a busy roadway with local fire station nearby.

Market authorities should enforce clear passageways, regular safety inspections and mandatory fire drills to curb salvage yard hazards before next rainy season.
