Court Ruling on INEC Timelines Could Trigger APC Exodus, Says ADC
A Federal High Court in Abuja has struck down the Independent National Electoral Commission’s timetable for party primaries and candidate nominations for the 2027 elections. Justice Mohammed Umar ruled that INEC exceeded its powers by setting strict deadlines for parties, saying the move contradicts the Electoral Act. The Youth Party had challenged INEC in suit FHC/ABJ/CS/517/2026. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) praised the verdict, recalling its objections to membership registration deadlines and primary schedules. ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi said the judgement removes barriers preventing politicians from leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC). “Now that the court has ruled against these restrictions, we expect many will exit the ruling party in the coming days,” the party added.
