WHO Declares Hantavirus Outbreak Over on MV Hondius Cruise Ship
The World Health Organization has announced the hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship is over after the last quarantined contact tested negative. No new infections have been recorded since May 25, and the final person under monitoring has returned home safely. Twelve cases were confirmed and one was deemed probable, resulting in three deaths. The Dutch-flagged vessel departed Ushuaia on April 1, underwent quarantine in Tenerife and was cleared to sail again from Rotterdam on May 30 following thorough cleaning. Health teams traced and followed more than 650 contacts across 33 countries. WHO will continue studies on the Andes strain to boost diagnostics, treatments and vaccine development for future outbreaks.
