1.5 Million Students Benefit as NELFUND Disburses ₦282bn in Interest-Free Loans

1.5 Million Students Benefit as NELFUND Disburses ₦282bn in Interest-Free Loans

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has provided over ₦282 billion in interest-free loans to 1.5 million students across 288 tertiary institutions nationwide. At a Democracy Day event in Yola, NELFUND’s Head of Loan Repayment and Reconciliation outlined a new sensitisation campaign in partnership with the Northern Project Coordination Office and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas. The outreach will cover 25 universities in Northern Nigeria, educating students on loan eligibility, application and repayment terms. Officials emphasised that the scheme removes financial barriers and aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on youth empowerment. Students have been encouraged to interact with NELFUND representatives to clarify requirements and maximise their access to higher education.

Universities should pair these loans with financial literacy workshops and regular coaching to help recipients manage funds and avoid future debt issues.
