Rohr Reveals Why Michael Olise Turned Down Nigeria Call-Up
Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr says he first approached Michael Olise in 2019 while the winger was at Reading. Olise was on his standby list for the 2021 AFCON qualifiers but declined the invitation. Born in London to a British-Nigerian father and Franco-Algerian mother, Olise was eligible for England, France, Algeria or Nigeria. He has since chosen France, making his senior debut in 2024 and winning a silver medal at the Paris Olympics. Olise’s club career began at Hayes and Yeading aged six, before spells with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City academies. He broke into Reading’s first team in 2019 and won the EFL Young Player of the Season award in 2021. He moved to Crystal Palace later that year and now shines at Bayern Munich, where he has won his second Bundesliga title and featured in their Champions League run.
