Anambra to Arrest Parents Who Keep Children Out of School, Soludo Warns
Governor Chukwuma Soludo has declared that denying children access to free education in Anambra State will be treated as a criminal act. He issued the warning at the 2026 Children’s Day celebration in Awka, themed “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child.” Under the state’s zero-tolerance policy, no child should be found begging, hawking, or roaming the streets during school hours. With free education now fully in place, parents will face arrest and prosecution if their children stay away from class. Soludo noted that Anambra records one of the lowest out-of-school rates in Nigeria. He cited a UNESCO figure of 2.9 per cent and pledged to drive that number to zero. He also promised land for a separate juvenile correctional centre to keep young offenders apart from adults. The governor vowed to strengthen inclusive education for children with disabilities and launch a free toll-line desk for reporting abuse. He emphasized that every Nigerian child deserves a sense of belonging, regardless of background or ability.
