Asuquo Blazes to 400m Gold as MTN CHAMPS Day 3 Thrills in Ibadan

Day 3 of the MTN CHAMPS Grand Final in Ibadan served up another wave of excitement as multiple track and field finals went down at Lekan Salami Stadium. In the senior men’s 400m, Ezekiel Asuquo stormed to victory in 46.60s, fending off Benin’s Jules Waiga (47.23s) and Wisdom Alexander (47.51s). On the women’s side, Miracle Uwem Donald smashed her personal best with 54.07s to claim gold ahead of Joy Ayomide (54.61s) and Adepoju Adedoyin (54.84s). Junior athletes kept the pace hot as David Dominion Udoh defended his 400m title for Nigeria in a lifetime best 46.62s, just ahead of Ghana’s Kazali Iddrisu (46.68s) and Tosin Esan (47.30s). In the girls’ 400m, Treasure Okereke crossed first in 53.30s, followed by Becky Ebiyade (53.89s) and Faith Ezechukwu (54.04s). The 200m heats and semifinals also produced stellar times. Ghana’s Marizuk Shaibu led the senior men in 21.05s, while Taofikat Sulaimon topped the senior women’s semis in 24.40s. Junior semis saw Kazali Iddrisu (21.30s) and Chigozie Nwankwo (23.53s) set the pace. On the field, javelin star Samuel Kure threw 79.39m for gold, and Gowon Oghenerunor won the junior men’s long jump with 7.22m.

It's impressive that Asuquo managed 46.60s, yet the gulf to Waiga's 47.23s feels wider than usual in senior finals.

Highlighting only the 400m ignores the thrills in other finals like jumps and throws at Day 3.

Local coaches should review Asuquo's race footage to improve training techniques for juniors at regional meets.
