Greece to Ban Social Media Use for Under-15s from January 2027

Greece to Ban Social Media Use for Under-15s from January 2027

Greece will bar children under 15 from all social media platforms starting 1 January 2027. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis says the move addresses rising anxiety, sleep issues, and the addictive design of online networks. In a video message to youngsters, the prime minister warned that long hours on screens prevent mental rest and fuel unhealthy comparison. He noted that many parents report poor sleep and increased anxiety among their children. To enforce the law, Greece plans a state-mandated app that blocks access to sites like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. The system already helps prevent underage purchases of cigarettes and alcohol. A recent poll by a local firm found about 80% of adults support the ban. Schools have also outlawed mobile phones in classrooms and introduced parental controls to limit screen time.

This is a pretty forceful policy. Anxiety and sleep issues are serious, but I'm not convinced a ban alone fixes addictive platform design.

I get the concern over mental health, but why single out social media? Smartphones, games, even school stress play roles too.

Parents should start discussing healthy screen habits now, focusing on balance and offline activities before the ban starts in 2027.
