French Appeals Court Boosts Film Director’s Jail Term to Five Years in Child Abuse Case
In a landmark ruling, Paris appeals court has increased Christophe Ruggia’s sentence to five years for the sexual assault of actress Adèle Haenel when she was aged 12 to 14. The earlier conviction carried a four-year term, partly served under electronic monitoring. Under the new verdict, Ruggia, now 61, will serve two years in custody with an electronic bracelet. The remaining three years have been suspended. Haenel, who first spoke out in 2019, was among the first in France’s film industry to highlight enduring abuse. Her testimony helped ignite a national reckoning under the #MeToo movement and renewed scrutiny on conduct behind the camera.
