Two Seriously Injured, 18 Others Hurt as Train Derails Near Lewes, UK
Two people suffered serious injuries after a Southern Rail train derailed near Lewes station in East Sussex. Eighteen other passengers sustained less serious injuries, while emergency teams evacuated everyone from the train safely. The London Victoria-to-Eastbourne service, carrying about 150 passengers, came off the tracks at about 3:55pm. Three of its eight carriages reportedly overturned, trapping some passengers before rescuers reached them. Witnesses described violent swaying, smoke and dust inside the train, and passengers helping one another escape. Services in parts of Sussex were suspended as the Rail Accident Investigation Branch began examining the scene. The cause of the derailment has not been confirmed. Investigators will assess reports of buckled track and other possible factors.
