Nigeria Navy’s Platinum Jubilee: Launching the Gulf of Guinea Combined Maritime Task Force
By Musa Ilallah In February 2026, the Nigerian Navy was named Africa’s strongest fleet by the Global Firepower Index. It also marked one year of strategic sea-lift support to African Union peacekeeping, disaster response, and humanitarian missions. This June, as the Navy celebrates its 70th anniversary, it will launch the Gulf of Guinea Combined Maritime Task Force. This rapid-response multinational force aims to strengthen regional maritime security under the leadership of a Nigerian officer. Under Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, the 25th Chief of the Naval Staff, the service has expanded its capabilities. He has overseen the creation of the Marine Corps and Special Operations Command, and deepened partnerships through engagements in Qatar, Egypt, and meetings with US and Danish counterparts. With a focus on securing Nigeria’s maritime interests and boosting oil production, the Navy plays a vital role in the Renewed Hope Agenda. Jubilee week will feature an International Fleet Review, the Sea Power for Africa Symposium, and the formal take-off of the Gulf of Guinea Task Force.
