From Fear to Feline Love: How Cats Taught Me Respect and Boundaries
I always grew up fearing cats. In my Pentecostal home, any cat crossing your path meant prayers. I spent years training and selling dogs, convinced cats were tools of witchcraft. In 2020, I visited a friend’s house and met seven cats roaming freely. One of them wrapped its tail around my leg, and my curiosity kicked in. By the end of the visit, I forgot my fear and began to see them differently. I started reading about cat breeds and care, and soon welcomed my first cat, Nyssa. She taught me about boundaries, consent, and respect. Each purr and meow reshaped how I relate to people and animals alike. Seeing other cat lovers face superstition and stigma, I created a WhatsApp group that grew into a community. Now, I’m working on a cat café in Lagos to help Nigerians meet cats, challenge old beliefs, and appreciate how these creatures enrich our lives.
