The Agony of Finding a Home in Lagos: Agents, Fees and Frustration
House hunting in Lagos has turned into an extreme challenge. Upfront fees, endless inspections and demanding agents make finding a decent apartment feel impossible. In a recent interview, an internal migrant who asked to remain anonymous described how agents now demand at least ₦10,000 before even viewing a property. Tenants also cover every transport cost and often pay a percentage of annual rent as a commission. On top of agent charges, decent apartments in good locations start at ₦1.5 million per year. Some landlords insist on two years’ rent upfront. Many hopeful renters end up exhausted, broke and still searching.
