Russia to Challenge World Athletics Ban at CAS Amid IOC Shifts

Russia to Challenge World Athletics Ban at CAS Amid IOC Shifts

The Russian Athletics Federation plans to appeal World Athletics’ decision to extend the ban on its track and field athletes at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The federation argues the blanket suspension is discriminatory and harms its athletes’ right to compete. World Athletics has kept its suspension of Russian and Belarusian competitors in place since March 2022, citing the need to uphold competition integrity while no peace agreement emerges. President Sebastian Coe emphasized that sanctions were reviewed methodically and remain necessary under current conditions. This stance contrasts with peers like World Gymnastics and the International Skating Union, which have eased restrictions. The IOC has also agreed to let individual Russian athletes compete under strict conditions ahead of the 2028 Olympics. Ukrainian officials, however, criticize these moves as premature given the ongoing conflict, and World Athletics continues to support Ukrainian sports infrastructure through a humanitarian fund. Coe’s recent visit to Ukraine, where he witnessed medical operations at train stations and families affected by war, reinforced his view that neutrality is impossible until lasting peace is achieved.

Do you think CAS will rule in Russia's favour after that ban extension and what might that mean for future competitions?

I'd bet CAS might lean towards Russia this time — that twist could shake up upcoming competitions nicely!

The federation argues discrimination, but extending a blanket suspension seems consistent with wider anti-doping priorities globally.

I'm not convinced a universal ban is the best approach; collective punishment can undermine individual athletes who may be clean.

National federations should focus on transparent testing procedures and support athletes through independent compliance programs to avoid blanket restrictions.
