Founder’s Documents Speak: Missionary Servants of the Church Own Tansian University

African proverbs warn against claiming what isn’t yours. Recent attempts to convert Tansian University into a private enterprise ignore the founder’s clear declarations. In his 2017 autobiography and in his Last Will and Testament before his death in 2021, Very Rev. Msgr. Prof. Johnbosco Akam stated unambiguously that the university belongs to the Missionary Servants of the Church. He cited the Federal Government’s Provisional and Operational Licenses from the National Universities Commission and the Tansian University Law of 2007, all of which identify MSC as the proprietor. Even under pressure from church authorities, he insisted that one cannot separate the university from its legally recognised proprietor. These consistent declarations in official records leave no room for doubt. As the legal maxim res ipsa loquitur suggests, the documents speak for themselves in confirming MSC as the rightful owner of Tansian University.

True talk. Overlooking our charter risks undermining shared values and confidence among students and staff.

It seems odd that recent investors overlook the founder's explicit autobiography and will from 2021.

I get the emphasis on the founder's documents, yet I worry stifling private input might limit the university's growth prospects.

Stakeholders should review the will alongside current educational regulations before pursuing any ownership changes for Tansian University.
