Osun Assembly Defends Oversight Role, Urges Full Local Government Autonomy
The Deputy Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly says the legislature remains active in lawmaking, oversight and representation. He insists the Assembly cannot be described as a “rubber stamp” institution. He highlighted how changes under the previous administration weakened local council autonomy by centralising funds under a Joint Accounts Committee. He noted that no state in Nigeria currently practices full local government independence and contrasted this with earlier years when councils had more control. On accountability, he warned that any mismanagement of local government funds would attract sanctions. He cited recent Assembly interventions in the University of Ilesa, labour audits, security incidents like the Akinlalu crisis, and infrastructure monitoring on projects such as the Akinlalu road, the Ile-Ife bridge and Ora Igbomina water works. The Assembly plans a structured public engagement programme to improve transparency. Meanwhile, the NUJ in Osogbo called for electoral reforms to strengthen oversight and Nigeria’s democracy.
