NAFDAC Warns of Growing Drug Resistance, Urges Reporting of Side Effects
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has called on Nigerians to lead the fight against antimicrobial resistance and adverse drug reactions. At a one-day pharmacovigilance workshop in Enugu, agency leaders warned that antibiotic misuse is driving infections that no longer respond to common treatments. Officials explained that pharmacovigilance—the science of monitoring medicine safety—is essential to detect and prevent harmful reactions. Healthcare workers and patients are encouraged to report any side effects through the agency’s Med Safety mobile app so that regulators can act quickly to protect public health. Representatives from the World Health Organization and the Nigerian Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers pledged continued support. Traditional rulers also committed to helping curb the sale of fake drugs in rural communities. Workshop presenters shared practical strategies for strengthening vigilance across the country. Stakeholders were urged to stay alert and report any suspected case of drug resistance or adverse reaction.
