Tinubu’s Kenya Comparison: A Distraction from Nigeria’s Real Challenges
By Comr Vincent Aluu PhD During a recent project commissioning in Bayelsa, President Tinubu told Nigerians to take comfort in worse conditions elsewhere, especially Kenya. It felt less like leadership and more like an excuse. Economic well-being is not measured by a single fuel price. We need broad indicators— inflation, income, employment, human development. Despite vast oil reserves, Nigeria struggles with fuel costs because of refinery collapse, currency instability, and erratic policies. Kenya may pay more at the pump at times, but its diversified economy and stronger institutions offer greater stability. Courts there have even annulled flawed elections. In Nigeria, polls often end in legal disputes and public distrust. True leadership should raise our own benchmarks, not point to other countries’ struggles. Nigeria needs sustained progress across all major indicators, not consolation through comparison.
