CAF Rejects Proposal to Expand AFCON From 24 to 28 Teams
The Confederation of African Football has voted down a plan to increase the number of Africa Cup of Nations participants from 24 to 28. The idea was first proposed by CAF leadership at a press conference in Dar es Salaam, with a view to implementing it at the 2028 tournament. However, members of the executive committee reportedly opposed the change, describing it as unjustified and rushed. Despite the setback, CAF maintains that efforts to improve the competition are ongoing. Its communications director stated that format discussions form part of a wider strategy to strengthen African football. Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will host the next AFCON in 2027, while bids are open for the 2028 edition, with Ethiopia, Morocco and a Botswana–South Africa joint bid among the contenders.
