From ₦10 to ₦200 Garri: Tinubu’s Reforms and the Surge in Banditry

Under Jonathan a cup of garri cost ₦10, yet hunger persisted. Today it sells for ₦200 and many still go without food. We expected economic reforms to follow a revamped refinery sector and major investment in agriculture. Without affordable food and local refining, people refuse to starve. Some turn to banditry to survive—online fraud in the South and forest bandits in the North. These reforms bring pain, but our leaders invest in luxury instead of human capital. We can ignore the warning signs for now, but reality will keep knocking at our door.

The government should provide targeted subsidies for local garri producers and invest in better storage to curb shortages and price spikes.
