Tinubu Scrambles to Block Gawuna’s Defection as He Goes Off Grid
Former Kano deputy governor Nasir Yusuf Gawuna has gone off grid amid reports of a looming defection to the Kwankwasiyya movement and the African Democratic Congress. President Bola Tinubu has reportedly ordered senior APC figures to dissuade him from switching parties. Sources say Gawuna set his phone to “Do Not Disturb” while travelling to Saudi Arabia for Umrah and then a private trip to North Africa. Party leaders in Kano have been unable to reach him to discuss his next move. Political insiders reveal that Tinubu has deployed a powerful senator and a presidential adviser to negotiate with Gawuna. The APC may offer him the Kano Central senatorial ticket for 2027 if he stays. Analysts warn that Gawuna’s popular support among youth, ulama and business leaders could tip the balance in Kano’s 2027 elections. Should he join forces with Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the APC could face a major split.
