Inside FAAN’s Turnaround: How Olubunmi Kuku Transformed Nigeria’s Airports
When Olubunmi Kuku assumed leadership at FAAN, airport facilities were in decay, staff morale was low and financial controls were weak. Travellers faced dirty terminals, manual processes and long delays. In thirty months, she introduced six strategic pillars aligned with national aviation goals. Governance, infrastructure, workforce and technology reforms brought cleaner terminals, digital workflows and biometric security to major airports. Flagship upgrades—from modern restrooms and runway reinforcements to cultural murals—have reshaped passenger experience. All five international airports also secured ICAO certification for the first time, and audited accounts restored financial transparency. These changes mark a shift from reactive management to strategic planning. Nigerian airports are now positioned as gateways for trade, tourism and economic growth. The wider challenge is maintaining this momentum across the economy.
