Nigeria Leads Africa in Football Exports as Player Migration Jumps 60%

Nigeria Leads Africa in Football Exports as Player Migration Jumps 60% — 1 of 8
1 / 8

Nigeria has overtaken Ghana and Senegal to become the leading exporter of football talent in Africa, with 565 players in 135 leagues worldwide. A new global migration report shows a 60% rise in Nigerian players abroad since 2021, placing the country alongside Brazil, France and Argentina in talent production. The Super Eagles top the continent’s export list, followed by Ghana (379 players) and Senegal (320). Europe’s top five exporters remain Brazil (1,455 players), France (1,275) and Argentina (1,016). Attackers make up more than half of Nigeria’s exports, reflecting global demand for dynamic forwards. The Czech Republic has emerged as a key destination for Nigerian youth academy graduates. With only nine of the world’s top 50 exporting nations seeing declines, Nigeria’s football talent pipeline looks set for continued growth.

Not every player abroad is a success story—some might struggle for minutes in lesser-known leagues despite the headline figures.

Local clubs should invest more in youth academies and player welfare to ensure that export numbers translate into real development benefits.
