FG Unveils 5-Year NCE-to-Degree Pathway for Colleges of Education

FG Unveils 5-Year NCE-to-Degree Pathway for Colleges of Education

The National Commission for Colleges of Education has received ministerial directives to replace the existing dual 4-year degree programme with a continuous 5-year structure. Starting in the 2026/2027 academic session, all Colleges of Education will offer a 3-year NCE followed by a 2-year bachelor’s degree programme under one coordinated system. Eligible NCE graduates can now progress directly into 300 level, making the journey from teacher certification to degree faster and more seamless. The reform aims to reinforce the NCE as the baseline teaching qualification while ensuring graduates of Colleges of Education match their university counterparts. Many stakeholders have praised this policy shift.

I agree, a clear pathway like this could raise instructional standards and give students stronger drive to succeed across colleges nation-wide.

It's interesting they're abolishing the dual degree program in favor of a continuous structure without explaining transitional support measures.

I agree, no reason why they shouldn't outline how students transition. Na shaky move if clarity missing.

We shouldn't assume a longer five-year track automatically improves outcomes; implementation details and resource allocation will really matter.

Colleges should start planning faculty recruitment and infrastructure upgrades now to ensure smooth rollout by the 2026/2027 session.
