Kano Hisbah: Mass Wedding Is ₦250m Investment, No Divorce Without Reconciliation

The Kano State Hisbah Board has warned that couples in the upcoming mass wedding cannot dissolve their marriages without first seeking the board’s intervention. Commander General Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa said the state has invested over ₦250 million to sponsor 1,500 couples. Each pair will receive ₦100,000 as dowry, another ₦100,000 as business capital, plus furniture, wedding boxes and food items. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf introduced the initiative to help less privileged residents overcome financial barriers to marriage. Medical screening by the state AIDS agency will ensure couples are fit for marriage, with treatment offered for identified health risks. Past beneficiaries have built stable families and even named children after the governor in gratitude. The Hisbah Board urged all couples to value their unions and use the reconciliation committee to resolve disputes before considering separation.

I'm curious: will the Hisbah board's mandatory reconciliation step actually reduce divorce rates among the sponsored couples?

How will they measure whether the reconciliation process actually prevents divorces among these couples?

It seems the ₦250m investment puts a lot of pressure on couples to stay married, even if reconciliation might not always work.

I'm not convinced that forcing couples through arbitration leads to genuine reconciliation, it might just delay the inevitable split.

Perhaps they could offer counseling workshops before the ceremony to prepare couples for conflict resolution and strengthen their commitment early.
