Heartbreak for Nigeria as Favour Ashe Disqualified for False Start in 100m Heat

Favour Ashe, one of Nigeria’s medal hopefuls, was disqualified for a false start in the Men’s 100m heat at the African Athletics Championships in Ghana. Ashe and a Cameroonian sprinter failed to hear the umpires’ recall signal and were both disqualified after finishing their race. This marked Ashe’s debut at a senior African Championships. In the women’s 100m, Miracle Ezechukwu won her heat to advance to the semifinals, while Tejiri Ugoh placed third behind Cameroon’s Heverge Etame. Rosemary Chukwuma also eased through her heat with a controlled run of 11.44s.

Absolutely. A clearer warning system before the starting pistol would help athletes avoid false starts.

It's surprising that neither Ashe nor his Cameroonian counterpart heard the recall signal before starting the race.

I'm not sure blaming the umpires is fair; athletes also need to stay alert for the recall signal at major championships.

Coaches and athletes should run simulated start drills with recall signals to minimize confusion at international competitions.
