Court Strips Chief Olatunji Solaja of Soomo Throne, Bans Beaded Crown

The High Court in Sagamu has ordered Chief Olatunji Solaja removed from the Olu or Onisoomo stool of Soomo and barred him from all regalia, including the beaded crown, pending the outcome of Suit No. HCS/683/2022. Plaintiffs from the Osoribiya family contend that Solaja’s installation during ongoing litigation violated the lis pendens rule. They seek an order to nullify the March 2025 ceremony and restore the chieftaincy status as of October 4, 2023. Solaja argues he held a separate title created under the 2021 Ogun State Chieftaincy Law and points to decades of service. Respondents also accuse the plaintiffs of similar actions during the suit. The case has exposed deep divisions in Soomo Village and sparked debate on how customary authority coexists with modern legal processes. A final judgment is expected to shape future chieftaincy disputes in Ogun State.

I agree, the court likely weighed evidence credibility, risk of tampering with regalia, and urgency in upholding tradition.

It's unusual for a court to remove a traditional ruler pending suit outcome, raising questions about its impact on local customs.

I dey wonder if this decision ain't just stirring unnecessary tension within the Soomo community ahead of the full trial.

Local leaders should use this period to engage both parties and maintain peace until the court delivers its final verdict.
