Sanwo-Olu Urges Badagry to Honour Late Akran’s Legacy as Cultural Park Groundbreaking Begins
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on the people of Badagry to preserve the legacy of the late Akran, His Imperial Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, as a symbol of unity, peace and cultural pride. The appeal came at a funeral thanksgiving service at Freeman Memorial Methodist Cathedral, attended by the deputy governor, the Secretary to the State Government, executive council members, traditional rulers and religious leaders. Sanwo-Olu praised the monarch’s 48-year reign and nearly nine decades of life, noting how his palace stood for openness, justice and stability in the ancient coastal town. He urged residents not to let grief eclipse the Akran’s achievements but to honour his memory by maintaining cultural monuments, promoting local traditions and strengthening the identity of the Badagry Kingdom. Following the service, the governor led the groundbreaking ceremony for the De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I Cultural Park. The new park aims to immortalise the late king and boost cultural tourism in the area. In his sermon, the Prelate Emeritus of the Methodist Church, Sunday Ola Makinde, also reflected on the monarch’s hospitality, devotion to service and the importance of building a lasting personal legacy.
