Lagos Estate in Limbo: Land Grabbers, Conflicting Claims and Police Inaction

Lagos Estate in Limbo: Land Grabbers, Conflicting Claims and Police Inaction

The Lagos property market is under threat as land grabbers use forged documents and family disputes to seize plots. Chief Ndubuisi Umeh bought two plots at Ocean Breeze Estate, Eti-Osa, with proper survey plans and a Governor’s consent. He built a five-storey block and a warehouse before labourers demolished his fence and emptied his goods without a court order. A police team led by SP Wasiu Ademola arrested Ezekiel Olayinka, Adegbite Adeyemi and Shittu Adewuyi at the scene. Olayinka claimed he bought the same land from the Maiyegun family, while the new Baale disowned the earlier sale. Despite a prima facie case for conspiracy and malicious damage, the file was transferred to FCID Abuja and has been pending since early 2024. The stalled investigation raises concerns about police efficiency and investor confidence in Nigeria’s rule of law. Can alternative dispute resolution break the deadlock? And why has the FCID Abuja yet to conclude its probe?

How can estate buyers verify genuine survey plans or Governor's consent to avoid falling victim to land grabbers in Lagos?

I agree—always inspect certified survey plans at the Lands Registry, confirm Governor's consent in official records, and verify site markers.

Have you examined the state land registry files yourself or gotten any official stamps from the Ministry?

It seems unlikely police will step in without clear evidence, given how often forged documents slip through official checks.

While people blame land grabbers, perhaps families should improve internal dispute resolution before outsiders exploit these gaps.

Property buyers should crosscheck Governor's consent against the state lands registry and hire reputable surveyors before finalizing any land purchase.
