Protesters Chant ‘South Africa Must Go’ as They Storm MTN Ghana Headquarters in Accra

Tensions rose in Accra when protesters under the “South Africa Must Go” banner marched to the MTN Ghana headquarters. Demonstrators carried placards and chanted against South African businesses amid rising xenophobic attacks in South Africa. The campaign is a response to ongoing violence against African migrants in South Africa. Videos show crowds converging on the telecom giant’s offices, demanding that South Africans leave Ghana. On May 27, more than 300 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa arrived in Accra. Officials promised a “hero’s welcome” and support package for returnees. The foreign affairs minister said they would be treated with dignity, not as refugees. He also praised Ghana’s stability and hospitality, noting regular inflows of foreigners who feel at home. A high-level delegation, including the chief of staff, was set to receive the evacuees at the airport.

What do you think is driving these protesters to target South African businesses in Ghana instead of focusing on local concerns?

What specific factors or grievances do people cite when targeting South African firms instead of pressing local authorities?

It's odd how this protest message echoes xenophobic attacks in South Africa, yet it seems to ignore similar tensions within Ghana itself.

I'm not convinced that storming the MTN offices will address the root issues behind xenophobia across borders.

Maybe Ghanaian and South African authorities should set up joint forums to tackle xenophobia and protect businesses from politicized protests.
