1 / 5

Super Eagles keeper Maduka Okoye has expressed his regret over Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 World Cup. Speaking during a recent interview while in the UAE, he apologised to millions of disappointed fans. Despite the setback, the Udinese goalkeeper says he remains invested in the tournament. He revealed that he is now cheering on every African side still in the competition, believing their success reflects positively on the continent. Okoye highlighted Morocco’s and Senegal’s strong performances, as well as exciting results from Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde and DR Congo. He hopes their achievements will inspire a new generation of Nigerian stars. Looking ahead, Okoye urged the Super Eagles to turn this disappointment into motivation and focus on qualifying for the 2030 World Cup.

Do you think Okoye's backing of other African teams will actually keep fans engaged despite Super Eagles missing out on the World Cup?

Interesting that he apologised for missing the tournament but immediately shifted support. Feels like a PR move more than genuine solidarity.

Maybe local clubs should ramp up youth development and scouting to ensure Nigeria never misses out on future World Cups.
