Imo Women Protest Proposed AfDB Agro-Industrial Project Over Land, Consultation Fears
More than 100 women in Mgbara community, Ohaji/Egbema LGA of Imo State, protested against the proposed location of an African Development Bank-supported Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone in their area. The protesters said the community was not properly consulted before the project was proposed. They called for an open and inclusive consultation process, insisting that decisions about communal land should reflect the consent of residents. Community representatives said many residents depend on farming and fear losing their farmland and livelihoods. They maintained that they support development, but want their land rights, heritage and collective interests protected before the project proceeds. They urged the African Development Bank, Imo State Government and Federal Government to suspend further action until the wider community has been properly engaged.
