Ezza Indigenes Urged to Preserve Okeaku Festival from Political Influence
A socio-cultural body for Ebonyi indigenes in the diaspora has warned against attempts to hold this year’s Okeaku (New Yam) Festival without the approval of traditional custodians. It said a June 30 gathering by a group calling itself “Ezza Elites” was not sanctioned under long-standing cultural protocols. The organisation cautioned that presenting the event as the official festival risks undermining centuries-old traditions that mark the start of a new calendar year for the Ezza Ezekuna people. It urged organisers to consult recognised cultural authorities and adhere strictly to established practices. All sons and daughters of the Ezza nation, both at home and abroad, were called on to remain united and protect their heritage. The group stressed that the festival must remain a symbol of unity and cultural identity, free from political interests.
