Lady Defends Eating at Alexx Ekubo’s Funeral, Lists All the Foods She Enjoyed

A Nigerian woman sparked debate after sharing a video of everything she ate at late actor Alexx Ekubo’s funeral in Arochukwu, Abia State. She challenged critics who say guests shouldn’t eat at funerals, insisting that when food is offered, guests should accept it. In the video, she showcased small chops, goat meat pepper soup, white rice with Chinese sauce, Singapore noodles, Abacha (African salad), and boiled corn with peas. According to her, everyone danced after the meal to celebrate a man who “loved to live and live for others.” She defended the lavish reception as a fitting tribute to Alexx’s life. She argued that guests traveled far or flew in and deserved hospitality rather than being sent away hungry. Honoring his memory, she said, meant celebrating the joy he brought to others.

Why do some people think it's disrespectful to eat at funerals, especially when food is offered so freely?

I agree, sharing food at a funeral can feel like comfort. If family offers, it's natural to accept respectfully.

I noticed some folks worry more about funeral optics than respecting guests who simply accept hospitality and comfort.

I get the tradition, but turning a funeral into a bit of a food showcase feels wrong to me.

If you ever attend a service that offers food afterward, it might actually be more respectful to accept what's given.
