Anambra Assembly Approves Amendment Allowing Local Governments to Hire Private Lawyers

Anambra Assembly Approves Amendment Allowing Local Governments to Hire Private Lawyers

The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed an amendment to the 2024 Local Government Administration Law. The update revises Section 101 to confirm that local councils may use lawyers from the Ministry of Justice assigned by the Attorney General for court cases. It also permits local governments, with the Attorney General’s approval, to engage private legal practitioners for any legal proceedings. Deputy Majority Leader Jude Akpua presented the bill and Minority Leader Johnbosco Akaegbobi seconded it. The House will reconvene on April 30, 2026.
