Starting a Backyard Super Napier Pasture Using the Tumbukiza Method

Starting a Backyard Super Napier Pasture Using the Tumbukiza Method

I planted my first Super Napier grass yesterday evening using a slight variation of the Tumbukiza method. The idea is to harvest mature clumps, repl ant stem cuttings in new spots, and steadily expand the pasture. Super Napier boasts excellent drought tolerance and regrows quickly when the rains return. Under good management, it can deliver 12–18% crude protein, high digestibility, and ample energy, fiber, calcium and other key minerals. Its prolific biomass makes it ideal for cut-and-carry feeding. My long-term aim is to secure a farm-grown forage supply for pregnant and lactating does, as well as growing rams and young goats. Every thriving livestock farm starts with quality feed, and this is just the beginning of my pasture development journey.

How are you defining robust regrowth—by height or tiller count? That detail matters for timing.

Super Napier's drought tolerance is often praised, but dense or heavy soils can hamper quick root establishment after transplanting mature clumps.

Replanting mature clumps sounds good, but cutting into established tufts might weaken existing stands and invite pests if not managed carefully.

Start by testing Tumbukiza on a small patch, monitoring moisture levels daily, then gradually scale to your full backyard pasture to avoid overextension.
