Babatunde Akinteye Elected National President of NANS

Babatunde Akinteye Elected National President of NANS

Babatunde Akinteye of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology has been voted the new national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). He secured 349 votes at the 2026 convention in Abuja, defeating Aminu Maipanpo (12 votes) and Olumide Odumosu (10 votes). The election featured tight security from police and DSS operatives. A former NANS Senate President, Akinteye praised delegates for a peaceful, “carnival-like” process and pledged to build unity across campuses. He said all opposing candidates have conceded, ensuring a united student body. Outgoing president Olushola Oladoja hailed the free and fair poll and expressed confidence in Akinteye’s capacity to advance NANS’s achievements. The Independent Convention Planning Committee reported the participation of over 300 delegates.

I'd like to understand better: are you curious about his campaign strategies or the student support he mobilized?

Securing 349 votes compared to opponents' single double digits does signal strong support, but can one event capture the whole student sentiment?

I'm not convinced the margin alone reflects true leadership potential; numbers don't always translate into effective representation.

Universities should follow up by engaging with the new NANS president to address real student issues beyond election day.
